
Gardner-Webb To Host Converse College Friday Night at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb will look bounce back from an 81-56 road loss at No. 11 North Carolina last Sunday, as the Lady Bulldogs will host Converse College at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena this Friday night. The Lady Bulldogs will look to get back on the winning track on Friday night, as GWU had its eight game winning streak snapped last Sunday at No. 11 North Carolina.
The Lady Bulldogs' hot 8-2 start has received some national
attention, as Gardner-Webb received five votes in this weeks
ESPN/USA Today Top-25 Coaches Poll. It is the second straight week
in which the Lady Bulldogs have received five votes in the poll.
This seaosn marks the first time that the Gardner-Webb women's
basketball program has ever received votes in a top-25 national
poll.
Last time out, the GWU women's basketball team had four players
score in double figures, highlighted by Dominique Hudson's 17
points and seven assists. Fellow guard Courtney Epps had 16
points, while senior forward Margaret Roundtree had 12 points, all
of which came in the second half. Gardner-Webb played the Tar
Heels tough in the first half, as the first 20 minutes of play saw
six ties and five lead changes. The Lady Bulldogs overcame 20
first half turnovers to battle back and cut the North Carolina lead
to only six at 53-47 with 10:36 to go in the contest. However, the
Tar Heels were too strong for GWU down the stretch, pulling away
late with a 20-5 run to hand the Lady Bulldogs a 81-65 road
loss.
Gardner-Webb has five players averaging double-digit points thus
far this season in Dominique Hudson (11.5 ppg), Monique Hudson
(11.0 ppg), Courtney Epps (11.0 ppg), Margaret Roundtree (10.4 ppg)
and Sandra Vaitkute (10.2 ppg).
Converse College, which is located in Spartanburg, S.C., is a NCAA
Division II member and a member of the Conference Carolinas. The
Valkyries are 0-6 thus far this season, including a 65-47 loss at
Coastal Carolina on December 13th in Conway, S.C. Senior Ashley
Arff leads the Valkyries with an average of 20 points per game,
while no one on the rest of the team is averaging more than six
points per contest. As a team Converse is shooting 33 percent from
the floor and only 20.8 percent from the three-point line. The
Valkyries are struggling defensively as well, as Converse College
is giving up 84.7 points per game while only forcing 25.5 turnovers
per game compared to its 38.7 miscues.
The Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs have not faced off with Converse
College since moving to NCAA Division I in 2000-01. The Lady
Bulldogs are 1-0 this season against NCAA Division II and
Conference Carolina members, having defeated Limestone College
71-50 back in November 19th.
