December 18, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team recorded 16 steals and five blocks on Friday afternoon, holding the Converse College Lady Valkyries to 23.2 percent shooting for the contest in the 79-38 home win.
With the win the Lady Bulldogs improve to 9-2 on the season and 6-1
at home this season. The loss drops Converse College to 0-7 on the
year.
Gardner-Webb scored the first basket on a lay up by junior guard
Monique Hudson off the opening tip and did not look back, leading
the Valkyries for the rest of the game.
Despite the early lay up off the opening tip by Hudson, the Lady
Bulldogs struggled offensive in the opening minutes of the game,
totaling only five points in the first 3:30 seconds of play.
However, Gardner-Webb finished the first half strong, going on a
21-6 run in the final seven minutes of the opening half to take a
40-16 halftime lead.
In the second half, junior guard Courtney Epps picked up the hot
hand, as the sharp shooter drained three three-pointers in the
first three minutes of the second half to help the Lady Bulldogs
pull out to a 29 point lead at 53-24.
The Lady Bulldogs quickness and size proved to be too much for the
Valkyries, as Gardner-Webb ran away from the visitors in the second
half en route to its 79-38 win.
Gardner-Webb outscored Converse College 40-14 in points in the
paint and had 32 points off of 24 Converse College turnovers. The
Lady Bulldogs bench had 44 points in the contest compared to the
Valkyries 14 points, while GWU had 18 fast break points to the
Valkyries zero.
Senior forward Margaret Roundtree had 15 points, nine rebounds and
a career-high seven assists in only 26 minutes of play on Friday
afternoon. Epps had a game-high 17 points, as she was 6-of-7 from
the field and a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the three-point line.
Senior guard Meranda Burnett, along with both Dominique and Monique
Hudson, all had eight points, while off the bench freshman guard
Brianna Dillard had five points, five rebounds and a team-high five
steals.
For Converse College, forward Alaina Smith had a team-high 10
points, while Ashley Arff had nine points and four rebounds.
Gardner-Webb will return to the road for its next contest, as the
Lady Bulldogs will travel to West Lafayette, Indiana to face off
with the Purdue Boilermakers of the Big Ten Conference. Tip off is
slated for 7 p.m. eastern time.
