
GWU Opens Up Indoor Season at Appalachian Invitational on Saturday

Boone, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's and men's track and field teams opened up its 2009-10 indoor season on Saturday afternoon at the Appalachian Invitational hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.
The Bulldogs had 19 top-ten finishes on the day, a great start to the 2009-10 indoor track and field season which will continue at the start of the New Year.
On the women's side, the Lady Bulldogs recorded 12 top-ten finishes, including three top-five finishes.
Junior Laura Scott finished second in the 3000 meter run with her time of 11:01.93, while fellow distance runner Ariel Zimmerman finished third overall in the 1 mile run event, crossing the finish line with a time of 5:37.84.
Newcomer Ashlei Alexander shined in the women's shot put event, as she took third-place with a throw of 12.86 meters.
Staying in the field events, Carrie Long and Taylor Cook both finished tied for sixth-place with a height of 3.20 meters in the pole vault, while Ann Marie Howell took sixth-place in the high jump with a height of 1.63 meters and cleared the bar at 3.05 meters for 10th-place in the pole vault event. Fellow Lady Bulldog Sarah Herd also picked up a top-ten finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.58 meters, placing her in seventh-place overall.
Freshmen Ivana Hughes and Leah Steinke finished eighth and ninth with times of 5:52.81 and 5:54.15, respectively in the 1 mile run, while in the 800 meter run fellow classmate Zimmerman took 10th overall with her time of 2:31.01.
GWU's Lia Hudak also picked up a top-ten finish on Saturday, as the distance runner crossed the finish line in eighth with a time of 12:57.48 in the 3000 meter run.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs picked up seven top-ten finishes, highlighted by the 4 x 400 meter relay team's 10th-place finish with a time of 3:28.71.
Thrower Mike McPherson took fifth-place in the shot put with a toss of 14.65 meters, while Christoph Hutschalik finished 10th overall in the weight throw with a distance of 15.13 meters.
In the 55 meter hurdles, Johnathan Rucker crossed the line in fifth-place with his time of 7.68.
GWU's Charlie Steinke picked up a 10th-place finish in the 1 mile run with a time of 4:49.47, while freshmen Colby Witt and Josiah Stanton-Brooks took eighth and 10th-place with times of 9:31.34 and 9:37.85, respectively in the 3000 meter run.
Both the women's and men's teams will take off for the holiday break and will return to competition on Friday, January 15th, at the Appalachian Open in Boone, N.C.
