Bulldogs Fall to Wilmington, 6-1, in Non-Conference Action
February 21, 2009 | Men's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team dropped its eighth match of the 2009 season, falling to UNC Wilmington, 6-1. The Bulldogs are 1-8 on the year, while Wilmington moves to 3-3.
The doubles point escaped from the Bulldogs yet again, as they fell at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions to the Seahawks. The GWU duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer did manage to notch a doubles win; 8-6 at the No. 2 position.
In singles action, Slesarev rebounded from his loss at Winthrop with a (6-3, 6-0) straight-set win over Wilmington's Michael Pereira at the No. 1 position. The win improves his singles record to 8-1 on the year.
Altmayer came close at the No. 4 position for the Dogs. He dropped the first set 6-1, but turned things around in the second by forcing a 6-6 tiebreaker. However, the Brazilian native fell behind early in the extra frame and eventually lost 6-1, 7-6 (7-2).
Also, GWU's No. 2 Andrew Veeder was forced to retire in the first set of his singles match due to injury. It remains uncertain if he will play against ECU later today (Saturday, February 21).
