Women's Tennis Drops 6-1 Decision at Elon

The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team dropped its third match
in-a-row Wednesday afternoon, falling to Elon, 6-1, in
non-conference action. The Bulldogs move to 3-6 on the year, while
Elon advances to 5-6.
The Lady Bulldogs had a good shot at winning the doubles point
against Elon, as two of the three matches were decided by nine-game
wins. However, the Pheonix escaped with both matches and also took
the third for a clean sweep in doubles competition.
GWU's duo of Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia had a grueling match at
the first doubles position, where they fought their way to an 8-8
tiebreaker. In the extra period, Elon jumped out to an early lead
and eventually won the tiebreaker 8-6 to give them the deciding
ninth game. The Pheonix also took a 9-7 victory at No. 3 over
GWU's team of Amy Beavers and Kasey Ellis.
The lone point for the Bulldogs came at the No. 4 singles position,
where Gouveia won her fourth match of the year (7-5, 6-2) over
Elon's Daleen Kloppers. Gouveia now leads the team amongst singles
wins with a 4-5 record.
Both Ellis and freshman Tavenner Black came close at No. 5 and 6,
but both fell in three sets after first set victories. Ellis won
her first set 6-4, but fell in the next two 6-3, 6-2, while Black
swept her first set 6-0, but dropped back-to-back heartbreakers 7-6
(7-2) and 7-5.
The Lady Netters will look to get back to their winning ways this
Saturday, Feb. 28 at Charleston Southern. The Lady Buccaneers are
currently 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the Big South.
