
GWU' Men's and Women's Teams Both Take Fifth at 2009 New Balance Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships

Clemson, S.C. Both the men's and the women's indoor track and field teams took fifth-place at the 2009 New Balance Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships this Thursday and Friday.
GWU senior Jake Didion was named the men's Most Outstanding Field
Performer for the conference meet, as Didion placed first in the
long jump on Thursday and also came in first in the triple jump on
Friday.
Coastal Carolina won on the women's side, as the Lady Chanticleers
posted 176.66 points over the two days. Liberty came in second with
124.50 points, while Charleston Southern took third with 97.33
points and High Point finished fourth with 73 points. Gardner-Webb
scored 61.16 points to finish fifth overall for the two-day
championship event.
The Bulldogs dominated the women's pole vault event as seniors
Kelly Bridges and Victoria Argus took first and second, while
freshman Brooke Yeakley finished sixth in the finals on Friday.
Bridges won the event as she cleared the bar at 3.35 m (10-11.75),
the highest of the day among the women competitors. Argus took
second in the event with her high vault of 3.30 m (10-10.00), a new
personal best for the senior from Ashdod, Israel. The newcomer
Yeakley took sixth-place overall in the event with her height of
3.00 m (9-10.00).
Also scoring for the GWU women on Friday was Beth Long, as the
senior crossed the line in second-place in the 800 meter run finals
with a time of 2:18.26, a new personal best.
Fellow senior Caryn Daane, who won the shot put event on Thursday,
took fourth-place in the weight throw event on Friday, recording a
throw of 14.18 m (46-06.25), a new personal best.
The 4x400 meter relay unit of Argus, Cherish Richardson, Long and
Katy Milton also scored for the Bulldogs, as they took eighth
overall with their time of 4:14.76.
Other notable performances from GWU on Friday included senior
Carrie Minard and sophomore Laura Scott both setting new personal
best times in the 5000 meter run. Minard crossed the finish line
with a time of 19:02.66, well enough for 13th-place, while Scott
finished with a time of 19:22.69.
On the men's side, the Bulldogs also took fifth-place, as GWU
recorded 71 points over the two-day event.
Liberty won the men's side with 190 points, while VMI finished
second with 115 points, holding off High Point who finished third
with 100 points. Charleston Southern rounded out the top-four,
taking fourth with 83 points.
Didion led the way, as the senior picked up the win in the men's
triple jump event, posting a long jump of 15.19 m (49-10.00) for
the win.
Junior Paul Steinke faired well on Friday, as he took third-place
in the 400 meter dash finals with a new personal best time of 48.76
and also finished sixth overall in the 200 meter dash with his time
of 22.65, a new personal best.
In the 800 meter run, the Bulldogs had two runners score, as
sophomore Jason Wenzel crossed the line in fourth with a new
personal best time of 1:55.02, while red-shirt junior Charlie
Steinke finished seventh overall with a finals time of 1:57.56.
Similar to the 800 meter run, sophomore Johnathan Rucker and
freshman Daniel Mobley both scored for GWU in the 60 meter hurdles
finals on Friday, as Rucker took second-place overall with his time
of 8.22, a new personal best, while Mobley crossed the finish line
in eighth with his time of 8.67.
Also scoring for the Bulldogs was sophomore Evan Brusich who
finished in seventh-place overall in the men's heptathlon event.
Brusich recorded 3,960 points over the five events and set a new
persona best in two events on Friday. Brusich set a new personal
best time in the 1000 meter run with his time of 2:52.57, which was
second overall among the heptathlon competitors, and also set a new
personal best in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.66 which was
first.
Freshman thrower Travis Rogers had a strong performance in the
weight throw event, as he posted a new personal best throw of 11.74
m (38-06.25) on the day, placing him in 10th-place overall.
