No. 43 Gamecocks Route Bulldogs, 7-0, in Non-conference Action
February 28, 2009 | Men's Tennis
The 43rd ranked South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the
Gardner-Webb men's tennis team, 7-0, in non-conference action on
Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs fall to 1-10 on the year, 1-8
against non-conference foes.
Gardner-Webb fell behind early, as the Bulldogs dropped all three
doubles matches to the Gamecocks. The closest match came at the
No. 1 position where GWU's Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer
teamed up for the Dogs. The duo dropped several games early
and were unable to make a comeback, falling 8-5.
The Bulldogs were also swept in singles, but two matches did get
pushed to three sets against the Gamecocks. GWU's Carlos Quijano
won his first set 7-6 (7-4) at the No. 5 position, but USC's David
Wolff rebounded in the second with a 6-4 win and took the match
with a 10-3 win in the third set tiebreaker.
Altmayer also went three sets with USC's Johannes Pulsfort by
taking the second set 6-3. He too fell in a third set tiebreaker,
10-7.
The men will not play again until Tuesday, March 3, where they will
host ex-A-Sun rival Campbell at 2:30 pm.
