Wrestling Finishes 5th in East Regional Duals

The Gardner-Webb wrestling team went 2-2 Saturday at the East
Regional Duals hosted by Duquesne. The Bulldogs finished 2-4
overall this season, good enough for 5th place in the East
Regional.
The Bulldogs began the day with a nail-biting 20-19 win over
Delaware State. Amongst the winners for the ‘Dogs were
Courtney Roberts, Rob Tate, David Pelsang, Jonathon Velasquez, and
Dustin Porter.
Roberts got the ‘Dogs started with an 8-0 major decision win
at 125. Pelsang racked up a major-decision win of his own at 165
after Tate won by forfeit at 141. Velasquez took down his opponent
6-3 at 184 to give Gardner-Webb a 17-13 lead. However, Delaware
State took its first lead of the match with a forfeit by the
‘Dogs at 197. It all came down to the heavyweight match-up
and Porter delivered for GWU with a 7-2 decision to give the
Bulldogs the overall 20-19 win.
The Bulldogs weren't so lucky in their second match-up, as
Millersville was able to win several in a row mid-way through its
lineup to seal a 25-21 win.
Roberts was able to gain his second win in a row against
Millersville, downing his opponent 7-6. Tate also won his second
consecutive match by pinning his opponent at the 5:12 mark. Austin
Reece notched a 5-2 decision win at 149, followed by Velasquez's
second win, 5-1 over his opponent. Porter also gained a forfeit
victory in the match.
In the third match-up, Gardner-Webb found its winning ways again by
recording five pins and downed Wagner 40-13.
Roberts won again at 125, followed by a streak of Bulldog wins at
141-165. Tate recorded his second pin of the match at 141. Reece
followed with a major decision (15-3) win at 149, followed by
Justin Guthrie's pin at 157. David Pelsang was the last member of
the streak, also winning by fall at the 1:39 mark of the first
period.
Dave Sweeney and Dustin Porter were the other two Bulldogs to win
by pin. Sweeney notched a late pin at the 6:36 mark, while Porter
finished his opponent quickly at the 1:41 mark.
In their last match-up of the day, the Bulldogs lost a
heartbreaker, 22-21 to Duquesne. Matthew Featherston picked up his
first win of the season, recording a 6-3 decision win at 133. Tate
recorded his third straight pin at 141, finishing the day at 4-0.
Velasquez won his match at 184, also not losing on Saturday going
3-0 on the day. He was followed by a win by Dave Sweeney at 197,
and Porter finished the match with a forfeit win at
heavyweight.
The GWU Wrestling team will take a week off before returning to
action on Feb. 19th at Carson-Newman. The match is currently set
for 7 PM.
