Men's Tennis Starts Spring Break Week 2-0, Defeat Indiana State 6-1 on Tuesday
March 10, 2009 | Men's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team has pulled it together over the Spring Break holiday, winning two in a row against non-conference opponents. The Bulldogs latest victim was Indiana State, falling 6-1 to the Dogs whose record improves to 5-12 with the win.
The Dogs got it going early in the match as Head Coach Mike Griffith's No. 2 and 3 doubles pairs won to give the hosting school a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The duo of Andrew Veeder and Carlos Quijano smashed their competition, winning 8-0 at the third position.
The real story, however, came at the two slot with the combo of Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor winning a 9-8 (7-5) decision. Without the win, the Dogs would have dropped the point to Indiana State. Instead, the Bulldogs rallied around the pairing and used the win to propel themselves into singles action.
With the momentum on their side, the Bulldogs mustered five singles wins, the only loss coming at the three position. Junior Evgeny Slesarev won his match at one, 6-1, 6-3. Veeder followed soon after with a 6-2, 6-3 win at two. GWU's No. 3 Rafael Altmayer took his match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Quijano and Bernthal completed the five straight set wins with a 6-1, 6-0 win at five, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 win at six.
The men's team will take a few days to rest before traveling to Drake on Sunday, March 15 for a 2 p.m. showdown.
