Lady Bulldogs Wins Fourth-Straight Match, Defeats North Carolina A&T 6-1

The Gardner-Webb women's tennis team won its fourth straight
match by defeating North Carolina A&T 6-1 on Tuesday
afternoon. The Lady ‘Dogs are 4-0 over Spring Break,
improving their record to 7-7 on the year.
For the fourth consecutive match, the Gardner-Webb ladies swept the
doubles portion for an early 1-0 lead. Junior Laura Kriett and
sophomore Rita Gouveia teamed up at one for the ‘Dogs. In
their match, the pairing jumped to an early lead and didn't look
back, defeating their N.C. A&T opponents 8-5.
Senior Jenny Gomez and freshman Tavenner Black were able to break
serve at the two slot and go on to defeat their opponents 8-6,
while senior Amy Beavers and red-shirt sophomore Kasey Ellis
smashed their opponents, 8-1, at the third position.
In singles action, Kriett won in three sets at the first position,
6-4, 4-6, 10-2. The Bulldogs' two thru five lineup had an easier
time of it, sweeping their opponents in straight sets. At two,
Gomez won 6-0, 6-3, followed by a 6-4, 6-1 win at three by
Gouveia.
Beavers made short work of her opponent at four, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Her doubles partner was not to be outdone, as Ellis also only
dropped one game, winning 6-0, 6-1 at five.
The only loss for the ‘Dogs came at six, where Black was
forced to retire due to injury after dropping the first set 6-7
(10-8).
The Lady Netters will return to Big South conference play on
Sunday, March 15 as they travel to Radford for a 1 p.m.
showdown.
