Bulldogs Downed by Drake, 6-0, at Neutral Site
March 15, 2009 | Men's Tennis
The Bulldogs saw their perfect Spring Break record come to an end on Sunday morning as the Drake Bulldogs downed the Dogs, 6-0, on the Campus of UNC Wilmington. The loss drops the men's squad to 5-13, while Drake advances to 6-8.
Due to impending weather in the area, the two teams were forced to begin the match with singles action. Despite four of the six matches reaching extra sets, the Gardner-Webb men were unable to clinch a win in singles play as Drake took all six one-on-one matches Sunday morning for the 6-0 win.
Both Evgeny Slesarev and Ryan Bernthal won the first set in their respective matches, but both also dropped the next two for their three-set losses. In contrast, Rafael Altmayer and Carlos Quijano dropped their first sets only to rebound with second set wins. However, they too dropped the third set to their respective opponents.
It was a hard loss for the Dogs, but they will have to shake it off quick as neighboring foe UNC Asheville comes into town on Wednesday, March 18 for Big South action.
