Lady Netters Record First Big South Win, Defeat Asheville 5-2

The Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs tallied both singles and doubles wins to run past Asheville, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex. The win propels Gardner-Webb to 8-8 on the year, 1-3 in the Big South.
The Lady Bulldogs were able to win the doubles point behind their No. 1 and 3 teams. The GWU duo of Amy Beavers and Kasey Ellis got things going in doubles action with an 8-2 win at the third slot, marking the pairing's ninth win of the season. Soon after, Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 victory at the first position, improving their doubles record to 6-6 on the year.
Staying with the momentum built in doubles, the Lady Bulldogs were able to come out and impose their will in singles as well.
Beavers got the Ladies going by recording her sixth win at the fourth slot, defeating her opponent, 6-1, 6-1. Her doubles partner followed soon after as Ellis was able to win in straight sets at the fifth slot, 6-2, 7-5, improving her record to 9-7 on the year.
Senior Jenny Gomez also improved to 9-7 on the year by notching a 6-4, 7-5 win at two. Gomez's win was the clincher in singles action, giving the Bulldogs their fourth singles win over Asheville.
Finally came Kriett at the first slot. In her match at one, Kriett opened with a 6-4 win over her opponent only to drop the second set by the same score. However, Kriett rebounded for a 7-5 win in the third set to take the match and give the Bulldogs a 5-2 final.
Gardner-Webb will stay at home for its next match on Friday, hosting East Carolina to a 3 PM showdown.
