Bulldogs Run Past Asheville for First Big South Win, 5-2

The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs notched all of their points in singles action Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Bulldogs of Asheville, 5-2, at the Webb Tennis Complex. The win marks the first in conference play, giving GWU a 1-2 Big South record so far this season. It also improves their home record to 6-2 on the year.
Gardner-Webb suffered disappointing losses in doubles action Wednesday as the Bulldogs' two and three seeds fell, giving Asheville the doubles point. The duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer did win their match at one, defeating their opponents 9-8 (7-3). Andrew Veeder and Carlos Quijano fell at two, 8-5, while Jamie Lawlor and Ryan Bernthal seemingly fell apart at three, losing 9-7 after being up 4-1.
Despite the loss in doubles, the Bulldogs seemed fired up in singles action. Bernthal was the first to finish his opponent, winning 6-3, 6-1 at the sixth position for the ‘Dogs. Following soon after was Altmayer at the third slot with a 6-4, 6-2 straight set win.
Slesarev also mounted a straight set win at the first position, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-4 to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead. The win marked Slesarev's 15th of the season, taking his record to 15-4 at the No. 1 singles slot.
Quijano clinched the match for the ‘Dogs with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the fourth position, giving the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead with only two matches still remaining.
The final win for Gardner-Webb came at two with Veeder putting in a gutsy performance to come away with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win.
The Bulldogs will take a day off to rest before traveling to UNC Charlotte on Friday where they will look to revenge last year's 4-3 loss at home. Currently, the match is scheduled for 3 PM.
