Lady Bulldogs Fall in Conference Action, 6-1, to Liberty
March 22, 2009 | Women's Tennis
Gardner-Webb red-shirt sophomore Kasey Ellis was the lone
Bulldog to record a win on Sunday afternoon as the Lady Bulldogs
fell at home, 6-1, to the Liberty Flames. Gardner-Webb is now 1-4
in the Big South, while Liberty moves to 1-1.
Once again, Gardner-Webb was unable to take advantage of the
doubles portion, dropping two of three to the Flames and beginning
singles play with a 1-0 deficit.
The Gardner-Webb duo of Kasey Ellis and Amy Beavers won their match
in convincing style, 8-3, at the third slot. However, the Bulldogs
number one and two teams fell to Liberty, 8-4 at one and 8-6 at
two.
In singles action, Ellis was the only Bulldog to win her match,
making it the second consecutive match this has happened to the
Dogs. Ellis did a great job at the fifth slot, playing tough
and edging out her opponent, 6-4, 7-6(7-5).
The other five Dogs didn't fair so well as the Flames were
able to take the other five seeds of singles competition. Senior
Jenny Gomez was the only Lady to go to three sets on Sunday, but
was unfortunate to drop two straight sets in a losing effort.
Next up for the Lady Bulldogs is Appalachian State. The match is
scheduled for Saturday, March 28 at 1 PM in Boone, N.C.
