Women's Tennis Drops Fourth Straight Match, Falls to Appalachian St. 5-2

The Gardner-Webb women's program has fallen into a bit of a
slump as of late, dropping four straight matches, the latest coming
at Appalachian State by a 5-2 count. The loss drops the Bulldogs
to 8-12 on the year with only three matches remaining until the Big
South Conference Tournament on April 16-19 at Winthrop.
The Bulldogs had their opportunities in both singles and doubles
action, but were unable to seal them when they presented
themselves.
Dropping two of three in doubles wasn't the start the Bulldogs had
hoped for. The Gardner-Webb duo of Kasey Ellis and Amy Beavers
took care of business at the two slot, winning in convincing
fashion, 8-3, over ASU number two tandem. However, Gardner-Webb's
one and three squads weren't as fortunate as they both fell by an
8-6 count to the Mountaineers.
The Lady Bulldogs looked to turn things around in singles action,
as there was still five points up for grabs.
Not backing down, the Bulldogs came out and won two of the first
three matches in singles to tie the match at 2-2. The first win
for Gardner-Webb came at the first position as junior Laura Kriett
won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Following shortly after was
red-shirt sophomore Kasey Ellis who rebounded after a first set
loss to defeat her opponent in three, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at the fifth
position.
With the match tied at 2-2, the Mountaineers were able to take the
lead with a three set win at the third slot as senior Jenny Gomez
fell in consecutive sets, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.
ASU put it away in the very next match, as sophomore Rita Gouveia
also fell in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-7.
Freshman Tavenner Black was the last to finish, falling 7-5, 3-6,
2-6 to mark the third three set loss for the Bulldogs on the
day.
Gardner-Webb will look to get out of their slump tomorrow as they
stay in non-conference action with a match at Western Carolina
scheduled for 1 pm in Cullowhee, N.C.
