Bulldogs Drop 5-2 Decision to Campbell, Move to 1-2 at Home

The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team dropped its second home match of the season, falling 5-2 to Campbell on Wednesday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-11 on the year.

For just the second time all season, the Bulldogs began the match by taking the doubles point from their opponents. Both the No. 2 and 3 squads won their matches 8-3 against their Camel foes to take an early 1-0 lead. GWU's Evgeny Slesarev and Jamie Lawlor won at the second position, followed by Ryan Bernthal and Andrew Veeder at the third.

Despite winning the doubles point, the Bulldogs couldn't seem to find their game in singles action, as Campbell won five of the six singles points for the 5-2 victory.

The lone win for the Bulldogs came from Rafael Altmayer at the No. 4 position. Altmayer won a close first set 7-5, and followed it up with a 6-3 win in the second for the victory.

Several of the Bulldogs lost three-set matches on Wednesday, two of which came after they won their first sets. Slesarev dropped the first set in his match, 2-6, but rebounded for a 6-3 win in the second. He broke early in the third set, but his opponent was able to stay close and broke back later in the set to take a 6-4 win for the victory.

GWU's Carlos Quijano won his first set, 6-3, at the fourth position, but dropped the second and third sets 6-1, 6-1 for the three-set loss. Bernthal won his first set, 7-5, at the sixth slot, but fell 7-5 in the second, and lost his third set 7-6 (7-3).

Gardner-Webb will take a few days to regroup before hosting a double-header on Saturday, March 7 against Pfeiffer and Lenoir-Rhyne. The Pfeiffer match is scheduled for 11 AM, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne at 3 PM.
