GWU's Hughey and Warkentin Set New Records at Last Chance Meet
March 04, 2009 | Swimming
Knoxville, Tenn. Gardner-Webb swimmers Corey Hughey and
Rachel Warkentin competed this past weekend at the Last Chance Meet
against the likes of Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisville and Western
Kentucky at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The two swimmers set four new team records over the two-day
event.
Hughey set a new record in the 200 back event, as the junior
touched the wall in second-place with a time of 2:02.60, surpassing
fellow teammate Sarah Steadman's time of 2:03.57 set at the 2009
CCSA Championships in February. The junior also took fourth-place
overall in her preliminary heat with a time of 57.39 in the 100
back.
Warkentin blew past her old record of 2:06.28 in the 200 fly event,
not once but twice this past weekend. The sophomore first set the
new 200 fly record with a time of 2:03.93 in the preliminaries and
then went on to top that with the new current record of 2:02.86 in
the finals, where she touched the wall in third-place.
Warkentin also set a new GWU record in the 100 fly, as she touched
the wall in a time of 56.11, which was good enough for a
fifth-place showing in her preliminary heat.
