Women's Tennis Drops First Home Match of Season, 5-2, to Campbell

The Gardner-Webb Lady Netters dropped their first home match of the 2009 dual season, falling 5-2 to Campbell Wednesday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex. The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 3-7 on the year, 3-5 against non-conference opponents.
Gardner-Webb fell behind early, as the Camels were able to win all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles competition. The Bulldog duo of Laura Kriett and Rita Gouveia came close at the No. 1 doubles position, but fell 8-6, while the other two GWU teams fell 8-4 and 8-0 to the Camels.
The Lady Netters were able to pick up two wins in singles action on Wednesday. Gardner-Webb's Jenny Gomez won the first match in singles action, downing her opponent 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 position. Her doubles partner, Tavenner Black, also won her match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position.
Senior Amy Beavers came close to forcing a third set in her singles match, but fell 6-2, 7-5 at the No. 4 position. Kriett also had a close match at No. 1, falling in straight sets 6-4, 7-5.
The Lady Bulldogs will take a few days off before hosting a double-header this Saturday, March 7, against Pfeiffer and Lenoir-Rhyne. The Pfeiffer match is scheduled for 11 AM, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne at 3 PM.
