Men's Tennis Sweeps Double-Header on Saturday
March 08, 2009 | Men's Tennis
The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team found its winning ways again by sweeping its double-header against Pfeiffer and Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex. The Dogs won both matches by a 7-0 margin.
For the second consecutive time, the Bulldogs opened the match by winning the doubles point. Gardner-Webb's duo of Evgeny Slesarev and Andrew Veeder notched a win at the first doubles position, 8-5, followed by an 8-1 win by Ryan Bernthal and Jamie Lawlor at the third position. The Bulldogs almost made a clean sweep of it, but the team of Carlos Quijano and Rafael Altmayer lost a close match at the second position, 8-6.
However, the Bulldogs did make a clean sweep of singles competition against the Falcons. Slesarev won his match 6-0, 6-3 at the first position, followed closely by Veeder who notched a 6-2, 6-0 win at two. Altmayer rebounded from his doubles loss to record a 7-5, 6-1 win at the third slot, and so did his partner Quijano, winning 6-0, 6-1 at five. At the fourth position, Lawlor won in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, and Bernthal notched the sweep for the Dogs with a 6-2, 6-1 win at six.
Not many things changed in their next match against Lenoir-Rhyne, except this time the Bulldogs didn't drop one match in route to a second 7-0 win.
Head Coach Mike Griffith changed a few pairings around at doubles for the Lenoir-Rhyne match and it seemed to work as the Dogs swept all three doubles matches for just the second time this season.
Slesarev and Altmayer teamed up at the first slot for the Dogs, winning their match 8-3. For the first time this season, Quijano and Lawlor teamed up and notched an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, followed by and 8-2 win by Veeder and Bernthal at the third position.
In singles competition, Slesarev won at the first position 6-1, 6-2, followed again by Veeder at two with a 6-0, 6-2 victory. Lawlor notched his second win of the day with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) performance. Altmayer didn't drop a single game at the fifth position, winning 6-0, 6-0 over his LRU opponent. Quijano recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win at five, and Bernthal also won at six by a score of 6-4, 6-1.
The Bulldogs will not get much rest as they travel to Wofford for a 2:30 pm showdown on Sunday, followed by a match against Erskine on Monday and finishing with Indiana St. on Tuesday.
