The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team won its match, 7-0, over the Flying Fleet of Erskine on Monday afternoon at the Webb Tennis Complex. The win excels the Bulldogs to 4-12 on the year, 3-1 in their last four.
The Bulldogs began the match by winning the doubles point, taking the first and third positions to go up 1-0 over the Flying Fleet. Head Coach Mike Griffith paired Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer together at the No. 1 doubles slot. There, the duo took an early lead and didn't look back, winning the match 8-3 against Erskine's No. 1 and No. 4 players. Another 8-3 doubles win was recorded by the Bulldog team of Andrew Veeder and Carlos Quijano at the three spot.
Soon after, the Bulldogs were able to sweep all six singles positions. Slesarev won his fourth straight match at the first position, winning 6-3, 6-2, followed by Veeder at two with a 6-1, 6-2 win. At three, the Bulldogs' Jamie Lawlor won in straight sets, along with Altmayer at the fourth position. Quijano only dropped one game in his singles match, and Ryan Bernthal finished it off for the Dogs with a straight set win at six.
After the match, Coach Griffith commented, "I feel we are really getting better. It seems as if Spring Break has really helped our team get its focus and we are in match mode right now."
Now is the time for the Dogs to be in match mode as they host Indiana State tomorrow at 2 pm.
