GWU vs. Liberty Softball Contest Halted in the Seventh Inning
April 10, 2009 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. Gardner-Webb senior Angie Walls strolled up to bat with the bases loaded in two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning with the Bulldogs down 5-1, when the umpires pulled the teams off the muddy playing field for a 30-minute rain delay as the rain continued to pour down.
After the Bulldogs pulled the tarp over the infield and 30 minutes
passed, the game was officially halted due to the rain and poor
field conditions.
The Bulldogs and Lady Flames will pick up where the game was left
off tomorrow at 11 a.m. prior to the doubleheader.
As for the 7.2 innings played on Friday, the Lady Flames got the
scoring going in the top of the third, as Liberty pushed across two
runs on a Danielle Howard RBI single to left field and a bases
loaded walk to Beth Bennett, pushing the Lady Flames out on top
2-0.
The Bulldogs cut the Liberty lead in half by one swing of the bat,
as junior first-baseman Christa Fullwood led off the fifth inning
with a towering blast, which sailed over the left field wall for a
solo home run, putting the score at 2-1 in favor of the Lady
Flames.
As the rain turned from a slight drizzle to a steady shower the
field conditions continued to decrease, making the playing surface
a muddy mess.
However, the Lady Flames added three insurance runs in the top of
the seventh, as Bennett hit a three-run home run to increase the
Liberty lead to four at 5-1 heading into the Bulldogs final at
bat.
With the rain continuing to pick up, the Bulldogs would not go down
without a fight, as Fullwood lined a single to left field with one
out to get things going for GWU. After Fullwood advanced to second
on an error by the left fielder on her base hit, junior Many Ward
drew a four-pitch base on balls to put runners on first and
second. After sophomore Kelsey Witter grounded out to first base
for the second out, freshman McKenzie Morenus battled to earn a
walk and load the bases for Walls.
And that is where the game stands, as the two teams will look to
finish the 5-1 contest tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
