April 15, 2009 | Women's Golf
Ninety-Six, S.C. In the Bulldogs first ever appearance in the Big South Women's Golf Championship tournament, the GWU women's team finished in fifth-place overall with a three-round combined team score of 971, +107.
As a team, the Bulldogs played consistently, as they carded rounds
of 322, 324 and 325 to finish in fifth-place with a score of 971,
+107, 60 strokes back from winner Coastal Carolina.
GWU senior Yayoi Garcia carded a third round score of 78, +6, to
lead the Bulldogs on Wednesday and give her a three-day score of
238, +22, placing her in a tie for 13th-place individually.
Fellow seniors Dana Prozeller and Katie Garahan also turned in
top-25 finishes for the Championship tournament, as Prozeller shot
rounds of 79, 82 and 84 to finish tied for 20th overall with a
combined three-round score of 245, +29. Garahan, who was named the
Big South Scholar Athlete for Women's Golf earlier in the
week, turned in rounds of 84, 83 and 80 to finish the tournament in
22nd-place overall with a score of 247, +31. Despite the final
results showing that Garahan tied with Presbyterian's Kasay
Holbrook at the 22nd-place, Garahan has sole possession as the
22nd-place finisher as Presbyterian College's team and individual
finishes do not count in the final standings due to its transition
to Division I.
With that rule in place, sophomore Courtney Meyer, who was named to
the All-Conference team earlier in the week, finished in a tie for
23rd-place overall, finishing only one stroke back of Garahan with
a combined score of 248, +32.
With two other PC golfers in front off Mackenzie Renner, the senior
actually finished in the top-30 overall for the tournament. Renner
carded a GWU low round of 79, +7, on day two of the event and
finished with a three-round combined score of 252, +36. With her
score, Renner finished in a tie at 30th-place overall.
Coastal Carolina, who finished runner-up last year, won the 2009
Championship with a three-day score of 911, +47. The Lady
Chanticleers finished 18 strokes ahead of the second-place team
Charleston Southern, who finished the tournament with a combined
team score of 929, +65.
Winthrop finished third with a score of 935, +71, while Radford
took home fourth-place with a score of 951, +81, for the event.
With its fifth-place finish, the Bulldogs finished ahead of
associate Big South members Bucknell (976, +112) and Holy Cross
(1087, +223), as well as High Point (984, +120).
The Bulldogs finished the 2008-09 season with five top-five team
finishes, including winning the Larry Nelson Collegiate
Invitational tournament on March 30-31 in Kennesaw, Ga.
