Slesarev and Altmayer Receive Big South All-Conference Honors

Juniors Evgeny Slesarev and Rafel Altmayer received the distinct
privilege of All-Conference status on Wednesday evening, April 15,
released by the League's head coaches at the Big South's tennis
awards banquet held at McBryde Hall on the campus of Winthrop
University.
Slesarev received Singles All-Conference honors, while both were
named Big South Doubles All-Conference by finishing conference play
with a 3-2 record, 3-1 at the No. 1 doubles flight. Slesarev was
also named to the 2009 All-Academic Team.
This marks the third straight season Slesarev has received
All-Conference honors, as he was named Atlantic Sun First-Team
All-Conference in his freshman and sophomore seasons.
In his inaugural season in the Big South, Slesarev compiled an
unheard-of 21 wins at the No. 1 singles flight; only dropping five
matches all year, two coming in Big South play.
His 21 wins set the most wins in Division I tennis by a
Gardner-Webb men's tennis member. Slesarev finished the season
with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Liberty's Clay Cypert in the first
round of the 2009 Big South Men's Tennis Championship.
Altmayer also did well this season after moving to the third
singles position from four one year ago. This season, the team
captain recorded the most wins of his career in singles action,
finishing at 10-16. Season after season he has steadily improved,
proving to be a valuable asset to this team with his leadership and
determination.
