April 20, 2009 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. The Gardner-Webb softball team (17-22, 6-9 Big South) is coming off a heartbreaking extra-inning 4-3 loss to Charleston Southern on Saturday, a game in which the Bulldogs had battled back to take the lead before falling in the eighth inning. The loss snapped the Bulldogs consecutive conference series winning streak at two, as now Coach Cole's squad looks to finish the regular season on a high note, taking on the Winthrop Lady Eagles (20-19, 9-3 Big South) on Tuesday and Thursday of this week.
On Tuesday the two teams will play a doubleheader at Varsity Field,
the final home games of the 2009 season for the Bulldogs. The
first-pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
The two teams' will then wrap up its three-game series on Thursday
night at 5 p.m., as the Bulldogs will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. to
take on the Lady Eagles in what will be Gardner-Webb's final
regular season game on the year. The first pitch for the single
game is slated for 5 p.m.
Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader with the Lady Eagles will be the
last home game of the 2009 season for the Bulldogs. It will also
mark the last home game of the careers of the 2009 seniors -
Adrienne Smith, Angie Walls and student-assistant coach Kirsten
McLean.
The Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs and the Winthrop Lady Eagles are
no strangers to each other, as the two teams have met on the
softball diamond 12 times since the Bulldogs transitioned to
Division I in 2000-01. However, this week's three-game series will
be the first ever meeting between these two teams' as conference
foes.
The Lady Eagles hold a slight one game advantage over the Bulldogs
in the overall series, as Winthrop leads 5-6-1. The lone tie of
the series came in 2004, as the two teams played to a 7-7 tie at
Varsity Field in Boiling Springs, N.C.
The two teams' split last season at Winthrop, as GWU won game one
4-3 and then dropped the second game of the doubleheader 9-0.
