
Diamond 'Dogs Rap Out 23 Hits In 16-4 Win Wednesday Afternoon

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. Gardner-Webb rapped out a
season-high 23 hits and scored a season-high 16 runs Wednesday in a
16-4 rout of visiting North Carolina A&T.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (22-18) got an RBI single from Jonathan Ahearn
in the bottom of the first to go on top early, and broke a 1-1 tie
with five runs in the bottom of the third and never looked back. Ty
Boyles hit his 12th home run of the season in that burst, a
three-run shot, to key the rally.
Gardner-Webb added three more runs in the fifth, four in the
seventh and capped the scoring with a three-run eighth to complete
the season sweep of North Carolina A&T (14-30). The Aggies got
a solo home run from C.J. Beatty in the eighth and plated a pair of
unearned runs in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Mike Lewis (3-1) got the win for Gardner-Webb in a pitch-count
start, working 3.0 innings, allowing just one run on five hits and
striking out four (one walk). Josh White hurled 3.0 scoreless
innings as well out of the pen, and Taylor Brooks tossed a
scoreless seventh for the Bulldogs. Aaron Haynes and Kyle Paeplow
finished the game for GWU on the mound.
Gardner-Webb had 12 different players collect base hits in the
game. Boyles (4-for-5, HR, 4 RBI), Kurt Fulginiti (3-for-4, 2B,
RBI) and Matt Rizzuto (3-for-4, RBI) led the way, with Daniel Cooke
(2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 SB), Brock Miller (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs),
Ahearn (2-for-4, RBI, run) and Tyler Johnson (2-for-5, 2B, 2 runs)
each collecting two hits.
Freshman Jake Watts (1-for-2) collected his first career base hit
in the game, an RBI single in the seventh inning.
The Aggies collected 11 hits, with Beatty's 3-for-5 effort leading
the way. Eight other Aggies had one hit each in the game. Blaine
McCraw took the loss for the visitors, allowing six runs on eight
hits in 3.0 innings of work (three walks).
Gardner-Webb will hit the road for a very important Big South
Conference road series this weekend, traveling to Radford for a
three-game set. The Highlanders and Runnin' Bulldogs will get
started on Friday afternoon at 3 pm ET in Radford, Va.
