Bulldogs to Host Liberty in Conference Action on Friday and Saturday (April 10-11)
April 07, 2009 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. The Gardner-Webb softball team is coming off perhaps its best week of the 2009 season thus far, as the Bulldogs went 3-2 on the week with all three wins coming in conference play.
The Bulldogs (14-19, 3-6 Big South) had a historical week last
week, as the Bulldogs picked up its first ever conference win and
first ever conference series win since becoming members of the Big
South Conference this year.
Junior Christine Murray earned a Big South weekly honor, as she was
tabbed the New Balance Pitcher of the Week by the League office on
Monday, as the right-hander was 3-1 on the week with 35 strikeouts
and one walk over 14 innings of work.
The Bulldogs and the Lady Flames (14-21, 3-3 Big South) will play a
weekend series on Friday and Saturday; the first time the two teams
have met as conference foes.
Last season, Liberty swept the Bulldogs winning both games 5-4 in
Lynchburg, Va. on April 27. The Lady Flames have won the last
three meetings between the two squads and hold the overall series
lead at 6-1.
The Bulldogs are 1-1 against Liberty at Varsity Field, as the two
teams' split a doubleheader in 2007.
The weekend series is slated to start with a doubleheader on Friday
beginning at 1 p.m. at Varsity Field. The third and final game of
the series is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time on Saturday
afternoon.
