Radford, Va. Gardner-Webb junior pitcher Christine Murray was named to the 2009 Big South Softball Championship All-Tournament Team selected by the League coaches.
For the championships, Murray was 2-1 with two complete games. The right-hander allowed only nine runs, seven of which were earned on 15 hits while striking out 18 batters in 23 innings of work. In fact, Murray pitched 23 of 29.2 total innings for the Bulldogs in its first ever Big South Softball Championship appearance, including throwing over 125 pitches over 9.2 innings in the Bulldogs 3-2 loss against No. 4 Charleston Southern.
The Bulldogs, who entered the tournament as the No. 5 seed, defeated No. 4 Charleston Southern 5-3 in the opening game of the tournament on Thursday morning. The Bulldogs then fell to the top-seeded Radford Highlanders, who went on to win the tournament, on Thursday afternoon to fall in the losers' bracket.
On day two of the championships, the Bulldogs defeated No. 6 Coastal Carolina 12-8 in its first elimination game, sending the Lady Chanticleers home from the tournament.
The Bulldogs then had a rematch with No. 4 Charleston Southern on Friday night. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh, the game was suspended until Saturday due to lightning and heavy thunderstorms. When the game continued on Saturday, the Bulldogs batted the Lady Buccaneers for two and a half more innings before ultimately falling 3-2 in the 10th inning.
