
Gardner-Webb's Offense Sputters in 6-0 Loss to No. 1 Radford

Radford, Va. In its second game of the day, the Gardner-Webb softball team saw its offense sputter, connecting on only one hit over the seven inning affair, ultimately losing to the No. 1 Radford Highlanders 6-0 in the first day of the 2009 Big South Softball Championship presented by Texas Roadhouse.
With the Bulldogs 5-3 win this morning over No. 4 Charleston Southern and the 6-0 afternoon loss to No. 1 Radford, Gardner-Webb moves to 18-26 overall on the season.
Radford opened the scoring up in the second inning, as Hope Creasey hit a towering home run over the left field wall to kick start the high-powered Radford offense who plated three runs on three hits to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Highlanders pushed its lead out to 4-0 in the fourth inning by way of an RBI double by Kristen Shifflett, which drove in Leigh Godfrey on the play, and then added another run in the fifth off a solo shot by Michelle Beall to take a 5-0 lead.
Radford added another solo home run in the bottom of the sixth from senior Alex Roderick to take a 6-0 lead.
Radford's Chelsea Kelley (22-6), the 2009 Big South Pitcher of the Year, picked up the complete game win, holding the Bulldogs to one hit over seven innings while striking out five GWU hitters.
Junior first-baseman Christa Fullwood had the lone hit of the game for the Bulldogs which came in the first inning and was 1-2 at the plate and extended her hitting streak to a season-high 12 games.
For Radford, Godfrey was 3-3 with an RBI, while Michelle Beall, Creasey and Roderick all had solo home runs for the game.
Gardner-Webb will play No. 6 Coastal Carolina at 10:00am on Friday, May 9 in the first round of the consolation bracket. With the win Radford will play the winner of Thursday night's nightcap between No. 2 Winthrop and No. 3 Liberty on Friday afternoon, May 9, at 3:00pm.
