July 22, 2009 | Softball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Head softball coach Tom Cole, in conjunction with the Gardner-Webb Athletics Department, has announced that Morgan Baker and Michelle Primm will continue their academic and softball playing careers at Gardner-Webb University beginning in the fall of 2009.
Baker, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball for
the Bulldogs, hails from Louisville, Kentucky, where she played at
Eastern High School under head coach Melissa Goodall. Baker, a
5-10 infielder, hit .381 and posted a .486 on-base percentage
during her final four-years on the varsity team, including hitting
a stellar. 427 average during her junior season.
A six-year varsity letter award winner, Baker was twice named to
the All-Regional and All-District Teams. Baker received the
Offensive Award as a senior, while during her junior year she was
named the Varsity-Eagle Award Winner, given to the best offensive
and defensive player, and the MVP of the District Tournament. She
was twice named to the District Tournament Team and was also a
four-year recipient of the Team Defensive Award.
Baker, who plans to major in biology at GWU, was also a member of
the Louisville Lady Sluggers and the Majestixx club teams, where
she posted an overall batting average of .392 and an on-base
percentage of .480.
"Morgan comes in as a very versatile player, in that she can play
virtually anywhere on the infield," commented head coach Tom Cole.
"I saw her play third-base, shortstop, second-base and catcher; and
in the process she showed me she has a big stick, soft hands and a
good arm."
Primm, a local product from East Gaston High School in Gastonia,
N.C., comes to the Bulldogs by way of Belmont Abbey College. Last
season as a freshman for the Lady Crusaders, Primm was 1-1 on the
season in the circle, recording a team low ERA of 2.05 in 13.2
innings of work. In the field, Primm started 26 games and recorded
12 putouts and 12 assists.
A four-year letter award winner at East Gaston H.S., Primm posted a
high school career record of 52-21, while striking out 329 batters
in her final two seasons. As a senior in 2008, Primm was named the
Gaston Gazette Player of the Year and the Team MVP. A three-time
all-conference recipient, Primm helped to guide her team to become
the Big South 3A/4A Conference Championships twice.
Primm, who also plans to major in biology, won the 2009 NSA State
Championship with her Denver Dazzle club team.
"Michelle comes in as a pitcher/utility player," commented Cole.
"We saw her play this past summer at first, third, outfield and
pitcher; and we also know that she has experience at second. Her
ability to play multiple positions and her athleticism are definite
attributes. She also has a great attitude, strong work ethic, and
an obvious desire to play at the Division I level."
"We are extremely excited about the addition of both Michelle and
Morgan as they are the final pieces of an already strong recruiting
class," continued Cole.
Baker and Primm will join GWU fellow newcomers Jordyn Arrowood,
Presley Wesson and Jessica Milligan for the 2009 recruiting class
come this August.
