DURHAM, N.C.- The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fought hard,
but were overmatched as the No. 14/16 Duke Blue Devils defeated the
Bulldogs by a score of 3-0 Sunday evening at Koskinen Stadium.
The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Blue Devils until the
30th minute of play when Duke senior Elisabeth Redmond put a shot
over freshman goaltender Samantha Rupert to find the back of the
net. The Blue Devils were able to put another one past Rupert just
over a minute later when senior KayAnne Gummersall scored.
Gummersall was able to score again just before the end of the first
half, putting the ball past Rupert off of a header.
Rupert had another great game in the goal, shutting the Blue
Devils out during the second half, and recording 12 saves
throughout the game.
Senior Kasey Gladhill led the offensive attack for the Bulldogs,
recording two shots, with one being on goal.
Six freshmen, including Rupert, were able to see action Sunday,
which will be valuable later in the season as the squad heads into
Big South Conference play.
The Bulldogs return to action this Friday evening as they travel
down to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on former conference foe
USC-Upstate. The match is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m.
