
Strong Showing at UNCG Fall Tournament for Gardner-Webb's Men's Tennis Team

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.-The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team opened its 2009 fall season this past weekend, participating in the UNCG Fall Tournament at Greensboro, N.C. Seniors Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer both had strong outings in their respective singles draws, as well as a team in doubles play.
Slesarev finished third in the Flight A-1 Singles main draw, winning three out of the four matches he took part in during the weekend. His one loss came in the semifinals to Orcun Seyrek from UNCG, who was the number one seed in the draw. He bounced back to defeat Belmont's Renato Antun (6-4, 6-7(4), 6-2) to claim third place.
Altmayer finished fourth in the Flight A-2 Singles main draw, advancing to the semifinals by defeating the number two seed in the draw, Billy B. Heird of Longwood (6-4, 2-6, 6-1). He later fell to eventual draw winner Timion Mejjs of UNCG and Christopher Smith of UT-Chattanooga to finish fourth.
The two paired together to take part in the Flight A Doubles main draw, and advanced all the way to the championship match, before falling to the team of Arsel Kumdereli and Orcun Seyrek of UNCG (8-2).
Other members of the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team were also able to find success throughout the weekend as the pairing of junior Andrew Veeder and freshman Matthew Herrock were the winners of the Flight B Doubles consolation draw (8-2) by defeating their teammates William Kenny and Matthew Parker, both freshman.
Parker was also able to advance to the final match of the Flight A3 Singles consolation draw before falling to Stephen Crofford of UTC (6-0, 6-2).
