
GWU Cross Country Competes at Big South Preview Meet on Saturday Morning

High Point, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb cross country team competed in the 2009 Big South Conference Preview meet on Saturday morning in High Point, N.C. The Bulldogs had seven female runners and four male runners participate in the event hosted by High Point University.
The Lady Bulldogs picked up fifth-place finish, totaling 116 points for the event, only six points behind the fourth-place UNC-Asheville Bulldogs.
Junior Laura Scott paced the Lady Bulldogs as she finished just outside the top-10, crossing the finish line in 11th-place with a time of 19:51.00.
Fellow junior Diana Palka was the next Lady Bulldog to finish, as she crossed the finish line in 19th with a time of 20:06.00, just one second ahead of teammate Ariel Zimmerman who crossed the line at 20:07.00, placing her in 20th overall.
Senior Abby Callahan competed the 5k run in a time of 20:39.00, good enough for a 31st-place finish, while sophomore Elisabeth Sawyer and junior Lia Hudak crossed the finish line with times of 22:54.00 and 23:09.00, respectively.
Rounding out the runners for the Lady Bulldogs was Holly Scott, as the sophomore turned in a time of 23:33.00, finishing in 51st-place.
The men's team, which had only four runners compete in the 8k event, did not place as a team but had very solid showings.
Freshman Colby Witt led the Bulldogs, as he crossed the finish line with a time of 27:54.00, placing him in 17th-place overall.
Fellow freshman Josiah Stanton-Brooks finished in 35th-place overall, turning in a time of 29:21.00, while junior Jason Wenzel and sophomore Jacob Hoyle rounded out the Bulldog runners with times of 30:13.00 and 31:42.00, respectively.
Both the men's and women's cross country teams will return to action in two weeks, as the Bulldogs will compete in the Charlotte Cross Country Invitational on Friday, October 2nd, in Charlotte, N.C.
