CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Gardner-Webb defensive tackle Matt Goods was
named Big South Conference Freshman of the Week Monday morning by
the league office, marking the second time Goods has earned the
honor in three weeks.
Goods (East Orange, N.J. / Milford (NY) Academy) made his presence
felt on a pair of sacks at NC State on Saturday - one solo and one
assist - and was credited with three total tackles in the game.
The 6-foot-2, 285-pounder has made 12 total tackles so far this
season, and leads the Big South in sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss
(6.0) through three games this season. He also has four quarterback
pressures in three games played.
Goods leads the nation's freshman in the Football Championship
Subdivision in sacks, and is ranked No. 8 nationally in sacks per
game on the FCS level. He ranks No. 19 nationally in tackles for
loss per game, and has helped Gardner-Webb's defense rank No. 14
nationally against the run (70.0 ypg) and No. 2 nationally in
turnover margin (+3.0 per game).
Gardner-Webb (2-1) will now enjoy an open weekend on its schedule,
before returning to action on Saturday, October 3, with a
conference game at VMI in Lexington, Va.
