September 21, 2009 | Women's Golf
Cullowhee, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's golf team had its weekend cut short, as the Great Smokies Women's Collegiate tournament was cut to one round of play due to the heavy rains throughout the weekend. The Lady Bulldogs carded a first and only round score of 306, +18, on a cloudy and damp Saturday, placing them in a three-way tie for 11th-place.
Junior Courtney Meyer, who was selected to the All-Tournament Team,
led the Lady Bulldogs with a 72, even par, on Saturday, as she shot
a first round 35, one under. Meyer, who finished tied for
ninth-place was consistent throughout the day, posting 14 pars over
the 18-hole round.
The rest of the Lady Bulldog golfers were all newcomers this
season, as Lauren Smith, Meghan Allum and Hannah Hellyer all carded
a round of 78, +6, on the day, placing them in a tie at 56th-place
overall. Hellyer's 78 did not come without some excitement, as she
turned in an eagle on a par-five.
Rounding out the play for the Lady Bulldogs was Chelcia Peterson,
as the newcomer carded a round of 80, +8, to finish tied for
83rd-place overall.
Elon and the host school Western Carolina finished tied for
first-place, as both teams turned in rounds of 286, -2. William
& Mary finished in third-place with a team score of 288, even
par, while Radford (299, +11) and Charleston Southern (300, +12)
rounded out the top-five.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to the links on September 27-29, as
Gardner-Webb will compete in the UNC-G Starmount Fall Classic
hosted by UNC-Greensboro.
