
Bulldogs Set New Records and Personal Bests to Highlight GWU's Performances at Niswonger Invitational

Johnson City, Tenn. - Gardner-Webb redshirt-sophomore Christoph Hutschalik and the men's distance medley relay team set new school records, while a handful of Bulldogs set personal bests at the Niswonger Invitational hosted by East Tennessee State University this weekend.
Hutschalik shattered the school record in the weight throw, turning in a distance of 17.70 meters (58'1"), which placed him in fifth-place overall for the event and surpassed the previous record of 16.20 meters (53'1.75") held by Cody MacArthur.
The men's distance medley relay unit of Charlie Steinke, Paul Steinke, Josiah Stanton-Brooks and Nick Kelly ran its way into the GWU record books this weekend, as the Bulldogs turned in a time of 10:29.47, placing them in fourth-place overall for the event and placing themselves in the record book for the best time in the relay event for a GWU team.
Staying on the men's side, Stanton-Brooks turned in a personal best time of 1:55.17 in the 800 meter unseeded run, crossing the finish line in second-place overall, while Charlie Steinke crossed the finish line in 11th with his time of 1:57.94.
Fellow distance runner Nick Kelly finished fourth overall in the 3000 meter unseeded run with a personal best time of 8:49.46, while fellow teammates Colby Witt and Jacob Hoyle finished in 58th and 74th, respectively.
In the 60 meter hurdles, GWU's Johnathan Rucker took ninth in the 60 meter hurdles with a finals time of 8.56, while Evan Brusich placed 44th overall with his time of 8.87. Rucker also picked up a 10th-place showing in the men's high jump, clearing the bar at 1.95 meters (6'4.75").
Sophomore Mike McPherson turned in a personal best in the men's shot put event, turning in a distance of 14.59 meters (47'10.50"), good enough to place him 11th-place overall.
GWU freshman Bo Miller turned in a time of 7.12 in the 60 meter dash and a time of 23.54 in the 200 meter dash, while fellow newcomer Chase Fuller finished with a time of 7.43 in the 60 meter dash and 24.21 in the 200 meter dash.
Also competing for the Bulldogs this weekend was freshman Steven Gardner, who turned in a time of 7.55 in the 60 meter dash and a time of 24.60 in the 200 meter dash; sophomore Van Nelson, who finished with a time of 7.58 in the 60 meter dash; freshman Codi Merritt, who had a time of 52.87 in the 400 meter dash; and senior Paul Steinke who placed 42nd overall in the 400 meter dash, crossing the finish line with a time of 51.26.
As for the women, the Lady Bulldogs had a number of student-athletes set personal bests this weekend, highlighted by the distance runners.
Freshman Ivana Hughes crossed the finish line in third-place overall in the 800 meter unseeded run, with a personal best time of 2:21.00, while in the same event, GWU's Cherish Richardson and Leah Steinke both finished in the top-20 with personal best times of 2:27.19 and 2:28.15, respectively.
In the 1 mile run, again it was a Gardner-Webb freshman setting a personal best, as Ariel Zimmerman crossed the finish line with a time of 5:24.82, good enough to place her in seventh-place overall.
Gardner-Webb juniors Laura Scott and Diana Palka set personal records in the 3000 meter unseeded run, as did fellow teammate Elisabeth Sawyer. Scott crossed the finish line in 10th-place overall with her time of 10:52.19, finishing just ahead of Palka who took 14th-place with her time of 10:55.28. Sawyer placed 46th with a time of 11:36.74.
In the 5000 meter run, junior Lia Hudak crossed the finish line with a personal best time of 21:06.88, while in the women's pole vault event junior Carrie Long finished tied for seventh, clearing the bar at 3.30 meters (10'10").
GWU newcomer Ashlei Alexander placed 30th overall in the women's shot put event with a toss of 11.02 meters (36'2"), while in the long jump event senior Kayla Morgan turned in a leap of 4.77 meters (15'7.75") to place 41st overall.
In the women's distance medley relay event, the Lady Bulldogs crossed the finish line in eighth with their time of 12:53.47.
Freshman Yazzming Lee turned in a time of 10.53 in the 60 meter hurdles and a time of 30.04 in the 200 meter dash, while fellow newcomer Bethany Wright finished with a time of 63.85 in the 400 meter dash.
Gardner-Webb's Katy Milton turned in a personal best time of 28.41 in the 200 meter dash, while Aliegha Brigham and Caroline Arledge finished with times of 27.79 and 31.34, respectively in the same event. Brigham turned in a time of 8.14 in the 60 meter dash, while Milton and Arledge crossed the finish line with times of 66.67 and 74.70, respectively in the 400 meter dash.
The Bulldogs return to action on January 29-30, as Gardner-Webb will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the Liberty Open hosted by Liberty University.
