Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team will
return to action on Tuesday, January 26, as the Bulldog grapplers
will take on both Campbell and Belmont Abbey in dual meet action.
The first match will take place at 6 p.m.
Tuesday night's match will mark the second home match of the season
for the Bulldogs, as GWU fell to N.C. State and Appalachian State
in its home opener on January 20.
In the Bulldogs last bout, GWU dropped its home opener to N.C.
State 22-16 and then fell to the hands of Appalachian State 31-7.
Despite the two team losses, the Bulldogs had a number of wrestlers
perform well headlined by No. 13 Dustin Porter and his brother
Travis Porter, who both went 2-0 on the night. While, both Dustin
and Travis were victorious in both of their bouts, GWU also picked
up a tech fall win by redshirt-freshman Alex Medved at 157 and a
major decision win by redshirt-junior Jonathan Velazquez at 184
against N.C. State.
GWU heavyweight Dustin Porter is currently on a six match-winning
streak, as all six of those wins came in dual match action. Porter
also leads the team with 25 wins and 10 pin fall wins, while Alex
Medved and Ryan Medved have posted 15 and 13 wins, respectively
thus far this season.
The Fighting Camels of Campbell University at 0-7 thus far in dual
meet action on the season and are coming of a 21-17 loss to Duke
last Wednesday night.
Campbell is led by redshirt-senior Richie Apolinar, senior C.J.
Gittens and freshman Nick Rex, as the trio lead the team in wins
thus far this season. Apolinar is 12-10 overall with a team-high
five pin fall victories at 125 and 133. Gittens has posted an 8-9
overall record at 125, including two tech fall wins and two major
decision wins, while Rex is 7-8 overall with four major decision
wins at 149 on the year.
Belmont Abbey is 1-11 on the season with its lone win coming
against Spartanburg Methodist on January 19. The Crusaders are
coming off a tough Super Regional 1 Duals meet in which Belmont
Abbey went 0-5 over the two-day event.
Sophomore Shane Summerlin and redshirt-freshman Jake Varilek lead
Belmont Abbey in wins his season. Summerlin has posted five wins
on the season at 125, while Varilek has tallied four wins on the
season, coming at 165 and at 174.
Gardner-Webb will take on Campbell at 6 p.m. and will then square
off with Belmont Abbey immediately after at approximately 7:30
p.m.
