Wrobel and Kabanda Each Score in GWU 2-0 Win over VMI

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's duo of Nicolas Wrobel and Romeo Kabanda posted two goals to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to a 2-0 conference win over the VMI Keydets on Saturday night at Green-Harbison Field in Boiling Springs, N.C.
Wrobel scored his fifth goal of the season in the 50th minute to put GWU up 1-0, while Kabanda added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute to push the home team in front at 2-0 where the score would stand at the final horn.
The Runnin' Bulldogs offense controlled the action for most of the opening half of play, firing off 11 shots compared to the Keydets' seven.
GWU's Jon Ole Reinhardsen put two shots on goal for the Runnin' Bulldogs in the first half which included Gardner-Webb's best scoring opportunity, a header off a corner kick in the 26th minute which caused VMI's goalkeeper Brian Sowell to make a diving grab and keep the score knotted up at 0-0.
Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Adam Garcia was tested early by VMI, as the junior corralled in two Keydet shots to keep both teams off the scoreboard heading into the halftime break.
Out of the halftime break the Keydets outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 8-7 in the second half, yet it was the home team that broke through, scoring two goals in the final 45 minutes of play to lead GWU to a 2-0 win.
Freshman Chris Davis chased down a ball down the right side line and found Kabanda's feet just outside the 8-yard box. Kabanda took one touch and flicked a pass behind him to Wrobel who fired a shot with his right foot that rolled just underneath the outstretched arms of VMI's Swollen to put GWU up 1-0 in the 50th minute.
VMI totaled five shots over the next 30 minutes of play, yet it was GWU who scored the next goal of the contest, as Kabanda received a pass from Wrobel on the left side of the box, where he shot a low line drive into the right side of the net just inside the front post to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 2-0.
In the win, Garcia tallied four saves, picking up his fourth shutout win of the year, while VMI's Sowell recorded three saves in the loss.
Gardner-Webb outshot VMi 18-15 for the match, while the Runnin' Bulldogs led the way with 17 fouls over the 90 minutes of play.
Gardner-Webb (4-7, 2-1 Big South) will have a week off before hosting the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at Greene-Harbison Field next Saturday night, October 16th, at 7 p.m.
VMI will remain on the road for its next contest, taking on the Winthrop Eagles in Rock Hill, S.C. on Tuesday, October 12th, at 7 p.m.
