Runnin' Bulldogs Drop 3-0 Decision to Liberty Monday Afternoon

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Gardner-Webb women's soccer team fell by a 3-0 score Monday afternoon to Big South Conference foe Liberty.
The Flames (5-7-2, 2-2-0 BSC) got on the board first, when junior midfielder Aimee Luurtsema was able to find the back of the net following a pass into the box from sophomore midfielder Madison Short during the 19th minute of play.
Liberty was able to score again during the 24th minute of play when junior forward Silvia Betancourt put a shot past GWU junior goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne. Luurtsema was credited with the assist.
GWU (3-8-2, 0-3-0 BSC) was able to put three shots on goal during the first half, with sophomore midfielder Megan Frost, freshman forward Arielle McCarthy-Crum-Ewing, and freshman forward Ele Margelos each attemping to produce offense, yet each shot was stopped by Liberty senior goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt to leave the score at 2-0 at the half.
Liberty added another goal during the 70th minute of play when redshirt senior midfielder Maggie Woody put the ball into the back of the net following a corner kick by Short.
Gardner-Webb had four attempts at scoring during the second half, with McCarthy-Crum-Ewing, Frost, junior forward Dawn Rollyson, and sophomore midfielder Taylor Napoli each putting a shot on goal during the half, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will next be in action this Friday evening as they host VMI. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM at Greene-Harbison Field.
