
Men's Tennis Takes Share of Doubles Title at Jeff Frank Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team participated this past weekend in the Jeff Frank Invitational, taking on participants from South Carolina State, Furman, Charlotte, and host Davidson. The GWU duo of John DeVose and Andrew Carter teamed up to take a share of the event's doubles title, winning both matches that they teamed up to compete in during the event.
DeVose, a junior from Esslingen, Germany, and Carter, a senior from Melbourne, Australia defeated the duos of Mike Anders and Krzysztof Kwaniewicz of Charlotte (8-6) and Lyons and Moore of Davidson (8-6) to earn a share of the doubles title with the teams of Joe Schafer and Calum Gee of Davidson and Andrei Chvetsov and Tyler Droll of Furman.
DeVose also won two matches in singles play, defeating Gabriel Meana of S.C. State (7-6(9), 7-6(6)) and Walker Lyons of Davidson (4-6, 7-6, 10-6).
Carter was victorious in singles play against Davidson's Kevin Moore, winning 6-1, 3-6, 11-9.
Freshman Korhan Ates took home two singles victories, defeating Anton Protsenko of S.C. State (7-6(8), 7-5) and Alex Christ of Furman (6-4, 6-3).
Other members of the Gardner-Webb men's tennis team that earned singles wins during the weekend were sophomore Adam Knutsson-Sundblad over Furman's Chvetsov (7-6, 6-1), sophomore Roman Piftor over Charlotte's Mike Anders (4-6, 6-3, 10-8), and senior Andrew Veeder over Davidson's Connor Evins (7-5, 7-6(6)).
In doubles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs also picked up victories by the teams of Ates and Knutsson-Sundblad over the Davidson duo of Chris Mark and Ethan Kallick (9-8(3)), and Matt Parker and Blake Vail over the Davidson duo of Carter Braxton and Theodore Bolton (8-0).
The Runnin' Bulldogs will next be in action at the College of Charleston Fall Tournament, running from Friday, October 22nd through Sunday, October 24th.
