GWU Falls at Home 2-1 to Coastal Carolina on the Pitch Saturday Night

Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's soccer team hosted the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina and a very physical Big South Conference match on Saturday night with the Chanticleers escaping Greene-Harbison Field in Boiling Springs, N.C. with a 2-1 victory.
The match was an intense battle for ball possession from start to finish, with both teams not backing down from the other on a chilly North Carolina Saturday night as the two teams combined for 24 fouls, three yellow cards and a handful of heated arguments and altercations.
However, it was the Chanticleers who got on the board first, as Luis Faz fired a shot from 25 yards out along the right side line that sailed just over the head and outstretched hands of GWU goalkeeper Adam Garcia and into the left side of the goal in the 39th minute to put the visitors up 1-0.
Gardner-Webb was unable to find the back of the goal in the first half, as the Chanticleers outshot the Runnin' Bulldogs 8-3 in the first 45 minutes of play and took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The second half saw each team score, as Coastal Carolina took a 2-0 lead when Pedro Ribeiro scored from the top of the 18-yard box in the 60th minute off a throw in from fellow teammate Kris Sandtroen.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board and cut the Coastal Carolina lead in half in the 71st minute, as freshman Nicolas Wrobel tracked down the rebounded ball off a blocked Romeo Kabanda shot and put a screeching ball past Coastal's keeper Scott Angevine to put the score at 2-1.
Gardner-Webb continued to put pressure on the Coastal Carolina defense over the final 19 minutes of play, yet couldn't get the game-tying goal past Angevine and the Chanticleer defense, ultimately falling in the Big South Conference match 2-1.
GWU's Garcia was handed the loss, as the junior recorded two saves against a Coastal Carolina offense that fired off 13 shots, putting four on frame.
Wrobel's goal was his sixth of the season, while Kabanda was credited with the assist.
The Runnin' Bulldogs tallied 14 shots for the match, 11 of which came in the second half, yet only put three shots on frame, including Wrobel's goal.
Senior Adam Augruso and freshman Stephen Maxwell each had one shot on frame, while nine total Runnin' Bulldogs accounted for at least one shot in the match.
Gardner-Webb (4-8, 2-2 Big South) will hit the road for its next contest, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will travel up to Lynchburg, Va. to take on the Liberty Flames at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 19th.
Coastal Carolina will step out of conference play for its next bout, as the Chanticleers will take on N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night, October 20th.
