
Runnin' Bulldogs Take 12th and 17th Overall at the Charlotte Invitational

Charlotte, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's and men's cross country teams finished 12th and 17th overall at the Charlotte Invitational at McAlpine Park hosted by Charlotte on Friday evening.
The women's team placed 12th overall with a total of 373 points in the 5000 meter run, finishing ahead of half the 25 team field.
Senior Laura Scott led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a time of 18:49.10, placing in 55th-place overall, while freshman Ariel Zimmerman crossed the finish line in 65th-place overall with a time of 18:59.80.
Redshirt-sophomore Elisabeth Sawyer crossed the finish line with a time of 19:12.80, placing her in 76th-place, while redshirt-freshman Leah Steinke turned in a time of 20:46.10 to cross the finish line in 145th-place.
Senior Lia Hudak turned in a time of 20:50.60 to place 152nd, finishing 12 spots ahead of fellow classmate Diana Palka, who crossed the finish line with a time of 21:03.10.
Rounding out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs was junior Cherish Richardson who finished with a time of 21:45.60 and a 188th-place finish.
GWU's Zimmerman, Steinke, Hudak and Scott all turned in personal best times in the 5000 meter run.
Clemson won the women's 5000 meter run event with a meet low 43 points, finishing ahead of fellow ACC member schools Virginia Tech (51) and Wake Forest (66).
On the men's side, freshman Mike McClay paced the Runnin' Bulldogs in the 8000 meter run, turning in a time of 26:43.10 to finish in 67th-place overall.
Sophomore Josiah Stanton-Brooks crossed the finish line at 27:50.50 to place 113th-place overall, while freshman Trey Crook finished in 139th-place overall with his time of 28:52.70.
Freshman Justin Loy led a pack of Runnin' Bulldogs, turning in a time of 29:41.00 to place 159th overall, finishing just ahead of fellow classmate Jarrett Willis, who finished in 161st-place with a time of 29:45.90, and senior Justin Cole, who crossed the finish line in 162nd-place with his time of 29:46.00.
Redshirt-junior Patrick Williams and freshman Drew Ford rounded out the scoring for the Runnin' Bulldogs, as Williams turned in a 171st-place finish with a time of 30:37.60 and Ford finished 177th with his time of 30:37.60.
The men's team finished with a team score of 482 points, placing them in 17th-place in the team standings, ahead of Savannah State, Presbyterian College, Barton, Limestone and North Greenville.
GWU's McClay, Crook, Loy, Willis, Cole, Williams and Ford all set personal best times in the 8000 meter run on Friday.
Wake Forest won the men's event with 38 points, finishing ahead of Virginia Tech (54) and VMI who finished in third with 121 points.
The GWU cross country teams will return to competition in two weeks when both the men's and women's teams will compete at the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, N.C. on Friday, October 15.
