Pemasa Named Big South Freshman of the Week
October 25, 2010 | Football
CHARLOTTE - Gardner-Webb defensive end Preston Pemasa was named the Big South Conference Crons Brand Freshman of the Week Monday by the league office.
Pemasa (Garden Grove, Calif. / Orange Lutheran HS) collected 10 total tackles (seven solo), 2.0 tackles for loss, three quarterback pressures and forced and recovered a fumble in the team's loss to Presbyterian.
His forced fumble and recovery came on the same play just after halftime, and set up a short GWU touchdown drive.
The 10 tackles marked a new career-high for the 6-foot-2, 240-pounder, and his performance was another outstanding effort in a season that has seen Pemasa entrench himself in the starting lineup at end.
Pemasa has racked up 39 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and a team-high 5.0 sacks through six starts and seven games played in 2010 - with all of those numbers ranking among the league leaders for his position.
His efforts have helped Gardner-Webb rank No. 10 nationally in total defense through seven games and No. 2 nationally against the pass.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-4, 1-1 Big South) will host Coastal Carolina Saturday at 1:30 pm ET in Spangler Stadium.
