Runnin' Bulldogs Battle Coastal Carolina To Scoreless Draw Wednesday Evening
October 28, 2010 | Women's Soccer
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - After a ninety-minute delay, the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team squared off against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Friday evening, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw after 110 minutes of play.
The start of the match was delayed due to severe weather within the area, pushing back the start until the weather had cleared, creating safe conditions for the teams.
Surviving through sloppy field conditions, both teams put up even numbers during regulation. Gardner-Webb (6-8-4, 3-3-2 BSC) goalkeeper Chelsea Hearne earned seven saves in regulation to keep the Chanticleers (9-7-2, 5-2-1 BSC) from finding the back of the net, yet Coastal's keeper Amy Haggard stopped six GWU shots during regulation to send the match into overtime.
GWU attacked throughout both overtime periods, putting four shots on goal during the two extra sessions, yet were unable to produce the golden goal. Hearne played brilliantly in goal throughout both overtime periods, earning two saves to send the match to a scoreless draw.
Forward Ele Margelos and midfielder Megan Tremblay led the offensive attack for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with each putting three shots on goal.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will next be in action this Friday evening as they host Charleston Southern in the final home match of the 2010 season. Seniors Melissa Battista and Sarah Keyser will be honored before the match, with play set to begin at 6:00 PM.
