
GWU Women Take Sixth and Men Take Ninth at 2010 Big South Cross Country Championships

Blacksburg, Va. - The Gardner-Webb women's team finished in sixth-place overall and the men's team placed ninth at the 2010 Big South Cross Country Championships hosted by Radford University in Blacksburg, Va.
The women's team finished with 189 points, placing in sixth-place ahead of Winthrop, Charleston Southern and Radford.
Senior Laura Scott led the Runnin' Bulldogs women's team in the 5k event, crossing the finish line in 32nd-place with a season best time of 19:34.28.
A trio of Runnin' Bulldogs finished one after the other for GWU, as senior Diana Palka finished in 42nd-place overall with a time of 19:55.61, just ahead of redshirt-sophomore Elisabeth Sawyer in 43rd with her time of 19:58.43 and sophomore Ariel Zimmerman in 44th with a time of 20:01.48.
Gardner-Webb senior Lia Hudak placed 59th with her time of 21:09.06, while redshirt-freshman Leah Steinke crossed the finish line in 66th-place with her time of 21:46.74.
Junior Cherish Richardson rounded out the scoring for GWU with a 68th-place finish with a time of 21:54.68, finishing just in front of redshirt-freshman Ivana Hughes who finished in 69th with a time of 22:40.79.
The Liberty Lady Flames won the 2010 Big South Championship, turning in a team score of 39 points, as sophomore Jennifer Klugh won the individual award with her time of 17:54.33.
Coastal Carolina took second with 64 points, while VMI finished in third with 71 points.
On the men's side, the young Runinn' Bulldogs squad finished in ninth-place overall with 247 points, 36 points behind the eighth-place team of Charleston Southern.
Leading the way for the sixth straight meet was freshman Mike McClay, as he turned in a time of 27:20.01 to finish in 36th-place overall.
GWU sophomore Josiah Stanton-Brooks crossed the finish line with a time of 28:23.29 to place in 57th-place, while freshman Justin Loy placed 67th with his time of 29:37.05.
Freshman Trey Crook and senior Justin Cole crossed the line in 69th and 70th overall, with times of 20:50.77 and 29:51.05, while freshman Drew Ford turned in a time of 30:04.86 to place 72nd overall.
Rounding out the scoring for GWU was freshman Jarrett Willis, who finished 78th with a time of 31:10.29, while senior Paul Steinke crossed the finish line with a time of 33:18.37.
Like on the women's side, Liberty won the 8k 2010 Big South Championship with a total of 33 points, as Samuel Chelanga won the event with his time of 24:03.55.
High Point took second overall with 45 points, while VMI finished in third-place in the team standings with 69 points.
