WEEK 2: WRESTLING WEEKLY MATCH NOTES
November 10, 2010 | Wrestling
MOUNTAINEER DUALS
The Runnin' Bulldogs will compete at the Mountaineer Duals hosted
by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. this Sunday, November 14th.
GWU will take on three different teams at the duals, as the Runnin'
Bulldogs will face off with Anderson (S.C.) who defeated GWU 22-19
this past weekend. Then Gardner-Webb will wrestle host Appalachian
State and Belmont Abbey, teams that the Runnin' Bulldogs split with
last season at Paul Porter Arena.
SLOW START TO 2010-11 SEASON
Gardner-Webb got off to a slow start to the 2010-11 season last
weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs suffered three dual match losses
and only seven wins at the 2010 Hokie Open in Salem, Va. On
Saturday, November 6, Gardner-Webb suffered a 50-0 loss to the
Virginia of the ACC and a 32-6 loss to Rider in which Alex Medved
and Travis Porter were the lone victors in the dual match. In its
match against Anderson (S.C.) GWU had a 19-16 match lead heading
into the heavyweight match, however, the Runnin' Bulldogs had to
forfeit the match and ultimately fell to Anderson (S.C.) 22-19.
KEY RETURNERS IN 2010-11
Gardner-Webb has a number of key returners in 2010-11 that will
look to make an impact all season long. Returning with 22 wins from
a year ago is Alex Medved at 157 and his twin brother Ryan Medved
who earned 20 wins at 149 in 2009-10. Redshirt-senior Jonathan
Velazquez, who finished second at the 2010 NCAA East Regionals at
184, returns this season after posting 15 wins, including four
major decisions and two pin falls a year ago. Travis Porter
returns at 197, where he psoted 15 wins and three pin fall
victories a year ago, while Richie Spicel and Jason Porter can both
prove to be solid at 141 and 184 this season for GWU if both can
stay healthy.
LOOKING AHEAD FOR GWU
The Gardner-Webb wrestling will host its first home match of the
year next week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs welcome Chattanooga to
Boiling Springs, N.C. and Paul Porter Arena for a 2:30 p.m.
showdown on Saturday, November 20th.
