'Dogs Drop 55-3 Decision At Stony Brook In Big South Action

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Gardner-Webb posted an early 3-0 lead Saturday, but saw Stony Brook post 55 unanswered points to drop the Runnin' Bulldogs to their fourth loss in a row in a 55-3 setback.
The Runnin' Bulldogs (3-7, 1-4 Big South) were victimized by seven turnovers (five interceptions) that Stony Brook (6-4, 5-0 Big South) turned directly into 24 points.
The Seawolves scored 20 points in the second quarter, added three touchdowns in the third quarter and used a fumble return score and a short scoring run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.
Brock Jacolski ran for 131 yards and a score on 15 carries, caught a short scoring pass and returned the opening kickoff of the second half 94 yards for a touchdown to pace the Seawolves' offense - which totaled 418 yards on the day. Quarterback Michael Coulter completed just seven passes for Stony Brook, but threw for 158 yards and two scores - including a 61-yard strike to Matt Brevi in the second quarter that gave SBU a 14-3 lead and turned the game's momentum in favor of the hosts.
Gardner-Webb could not recover, despite 137 yards rushing from senior Patrick Hall on 26 carries and nine catches for 90 yards by James Perry III. The Runnin' Bulldogs managed 294 yards offensively and 17 first downs, but saw its only two trips into the red zone result in a short field goal and a fumble inside the SBU five.
Jeffery Williams paced the GWU defense with eight tackles and Brian Wittenberger added five hits.
Stony Brook was led by Dominic Reyes' 15 tackles on defense, and saw freshman Davonte Anderson pick off four passes.
Gardner-Webb returns home to host VMI next Saturday morning at 11:30 in a game set for television on SportSouth. The Seawolves travel to Liberty (4-1 Big South) with a chance to capture the Big South title outright.
