BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Four Runnin' Bulldogs reached double digits in scoring to lead Gardner-Webb over Mary Washington by a 76-61 score in the 2010-11 home opener Saturday evening.
Stefon Johnson scored 16 points to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs, while Joshua Henley had a double-double, scoring 10 points with 13 rebounds off the bench. Luke Davis scored 12 points and Jonathan Moore scored 11 to lead GWU's balanced attack.
Mary Washington took an early lead, with Bradley Riester scoring a three-pointer in the first possession of the game, but the Runnin' Bulldogs claimed the lead with 17:51 remaining in the half when Moore drilled a three, and GWU never looked back.
GWU built its lead to as much as 28 in the second half, yet the Eagles cut the lead to 9 late in the second half on the strength of five three-pointers in the half, yet the Runnin' Bulldogs were able to make the best of their trips to the free-throw line in the final minutes to seal the win.
Along with Gardner-Webb's four players with double digit scoring, the Runnin' Bulldogs had seven other members of the squad to contribute offensively.
Gardner-Webb led virtually every statistical category, dominating the points in the paint by a 46-14 margin. They also led in second chance points by a 17-7 margin, bench points by a 24-17 margin, and fast break points by a 14-4 margin.
"I was pleased with our team's effort defensively overall." stated Gardner-Webb head coach Chris Holtmann following the game. "We struggled to contain (Mary Washington) at the three-point line and allowed too may offensive rebounds, which is something we will work on. We played well at stretches, but need to become more consistent."
The Runnin' Bulldogs (2-0) return to action Tuesday evening as they face Florida State. Game time is set for 7:00 PM at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
