GWU Grapplers Pick Up Two Wins at Mountaineer Duals

Boone, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team went 2-1 at the 2010 Mountaineer Duals on Sunday afternoon, as the Runnin' Bulldogs defeated Belmont Abbey 24-20, held off Anderson for a 21-20 win and suffered a 32-9 loss to Appalachian State who hosted the meet in Boone, N.C.
In the dual match versus the Crusaders, Gardner-Webb took four of the first five matches and overcame a forfeit at the heavyweight spot to defeat Belmont Abbey 24-20 in earn its first dual match win of the season.
After falling behind 4-0 early after a major decision loss at 125, GWU freshmen Alex Hamm and Luke Dutch picked up back-to-back wins. Hamm scored a 9-4 decision over Graceson Pastirlik of Belmont Abbey at 133, while Dutch picked up his first pin fall win of his intercollegiate career 2:31 into the match versus Will James at 141.
Up 9-4, GWU did not back down, as the Medved brothers earned back-to-back victories at 149 and 157. Ryan Medved picked up a 20-5 technical fall win over David Saley, scoring a number of near falls in the match at 149, while Alex Medved earned a 6-2 decision over Appolon Jean-Paul at 157.
GWU then held off the Crusaders with wins at 174 and 194, as freshman Erin O'Dell picked up a 4-2 win over Jerami Bartley at 174 and redshirt-sophomore Travis Porter defeated Nic Rees of Belmont Abbey 11-3 to earn a major decision win.
The major decision win by Porter proved to be the difference, as even though GWU had to forfeit the 285-pound weight class bout and surrender six points to the Crusaders, the Runnin' Bulldogs still held on for the 24-20 win.
Gardner-Webb avenged a loss from last weekend to Anderson, by defeating the Trojans 21-20 on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Brett Kostern scored a 9-6 decision over Andrew Rankin at 125 to put GWU in front 3-0 early.
After falling behind 6-3 with a pin fall loss at 133, redshirt-sophomore Richie Spicel picked up a 20-6 technical fall win over Caleb Swinson at 141 to put GWU back in front in the match scoring.
Ryan and Alex Medved followed up with Ryan picking up a 10-5 win at 149, while Alex scored a 12-5 major decision win at 157 to push the GWU lead out to15-6.
At 165, Justin Guthrie picked up a 6-3 win over Nicholas Giulliette to put GWU up big at 18-6 with only four matches remaining.
The Runnin' Bulldogs fell in the next two bouts, including a technical fall loss at 174, which allowed the Trojans to cut the GWU lead to five at 18-13.
With a forfeit looming at the heavyweight spot, pressure was on Porter who stepped up and scored a big 2-1 decision win over Chase Duke of Anderson, which put the Runnin' Bulldogs in front at 21-14 and secured them the win, as with the forfeit at 285-pounds, the score finished up at 21-20 in favor of Gardner-Webb.
Gardner-Webb struggled in its match versus the host school Appalachian State, picking up only three wins and suffering three pin fall losses in the 32-9 loss to the Mountaineers.
GWU's wins came by way of three redshirt-sophomores, as Spicel shutout Mike Kessler of ASU 4-0 at 141, while Alex Medved defeated Travis Puckett 10-3 at 157.
The Runnin' Bulldogs lone other win in the loss to Appalachian State came at 174, as Guthrie picked up a 2-0 decision over Carter Downs for three points.
Gardner-Webb (2-4) will return to action next weekend, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will host Chattanooga on Saturday, November 20th, at 2:30 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.
