GWU's Tyler Cockrell and Evan Moffitt Earn Big South Recognition
November 18, 2010 | Volleyball
Charlotte, N.C. - Gardner-Webb freshman Tyler Cockrell and junior Evan Moffitt each earned Big South All-Conference recognition announced the League office today, as Cockrell was named to the Big South All-Freshman Team and Moffitt was named to the Big South All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.
Cockrell has had a very strong season, as the freshman middle blocker finished the regular season with the team lead and is second in the Big South Conference with 104 total blocks on the season, an average of 1.09 per set, which is also second in the Big South. Cockrell is on pace to set a new GWU season record in total blocks, as she is only three blocks away from surpassing the current record of 106 total blocks in one season. Cockrell is third on the team with 201 kills, while only fourth in total attacks with 446 opportunities. Cockrell was named Big South Freshman of the Week on October 18 when she posted 33 kills, 18 blocks and hit .306 for Gardner-Webb.
Moffitt, who has posted a 3.8387 cumulative grade point average towards her major in Chemistry, played her third different position in only her third year at GWU, moving from outside hitter as a freshman to middle hitter last year and to setter this year as a junior. Moffitt leads the team and is eighth in the Big South with 876 set assists, an average of 7.89 per set. The junior also leads the team with 28 service aces and in digs with 273. Moffitt is fourth on the team with 33 total blocks, sixth in kills with 68 and sixth in points with 114. Moffitt was also named to the All-Academic Team last season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will take on the No. 1 seeded Liberty Lady Flames on Thursday, November 18, at 5 p.m. in Rock Hill, S.C. as part of the first round of the 2010 Big South Volleyball Championships.
