Winkler Returns Home, as GWU Will Participate at the BTI Tip-Off Classic
November 24, 2010 | Women's Basketball
Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb junior center Breynna Winkler will return home to her home state of Oklahoma this week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will play in the three-day BTI Tip-Off Classic hosted by the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma from November 26-28.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are coming off their first loss of the season, a 68-98 loss to the Mountaineers of Appalachian State in Boone, N.C. last Monday night. The loss marks the worst loss for GWU since suffering a 31-point loss at Jacksonville back in 2007-08.
Gardner-Webb senior Dominique Hudson not only led the way with 19 points in the loss, however, she provided perhaps the only highlight of the game for the Runnin' Bulldogs as she tallied her 1,000 career point midway through the second half to become only the 15th player to join the 1,000 career points club in GWU women's basketball history.
While Winkler, who had nine points, and sophomore guard Brianna Dillard, who posted 14 points of her own, had career-high scoring nights, Gardner-Webb couldn't stop the hot shooting Mountaineers who finished the contest shooting 51.3 percent from the floor as a team, while outrebounding GWU 48-36 for the game.
GWU, who started the season off 2-0, will look to regroup and rebound this week, as the Runnin' Bulldogs will have not one, not two, but three games over the Thanksgiving break.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will tip-off its BTI Classic with a 4 p.m. central time showdown on Friday, November 26th, with Prairie View of the SWAC. The Panthers are 0-2 thus far this season, however, both losses have come against formidable opponents in Louisiana Tech and Georgia Tech.
Gardner-Webb will then turn around to face its toughest opponent to date in No. 11 Oklahoma. The Sooners, who are hosting the tournament, are 3-0 thus far this season and have won each contest by double-digit points. While the Runnin' Bulldogs have never faced the Sooners, Oklahoma is the third nationally ranked opponent that GWU has faced over the last five years, having fallen to No. 1 Maryland in 2006-07 and No. 11 North Carolina last season.
The start time for that contest is for 2 p.m. central time on Saturday, November 27th.
Coach Reeves' squad will then wrap up the tournament with a 2 p.m. central time tip-off against the Lady Broncs of Texas-Pan American. Gardner-Webb is 1-2 all-time versus the Lady Broncs with the win coming last year at the Longwood Lancer Classic in Farmville, Va. However, this season the Lady Broncs are off to a 4-0 start and will look to avenge last year's 74-57 loss to the Runnin' Bulldogs.
